Jats’a-já Festival

Summer has reached its apex, and Riviera Maya is filled with the voices and colour from its visitors from all around the world. From Puerto Morelos to Punta Allen, natural attractions, parks, resorts and beaches are being enjoyed by beach-loving visitors who want to make the most from their summer vacation.

Now if you are one of the revellers, or are about to arrive to Riviera Maya, you can’t miss the eight edition of the Jats’a-Já _Festival in Mahahual, from July 31st to August 2nd, 2015. This festival celebrates the rebirth of this community after hurricane “Dean”; and comprises cultural, ecological, entertainment and sports activities for all ages. In addition to these activities, a Mayan ceremony is held to plea to the gods for the welfare of Mahahual and its inhabitants.

Mahahual is an oceanfront village in the south from Riviera Maya, two hours North from Chetumal International Airport by car, and up to five hours South from Cancun International Airport. Jats’a-Já is programmed to start at 6:00 on July 31st at 6:00 p.m., with a nautical pilgrimage and the Mayan Ceremony, followed by the first gastronomic and cultural activities that include concerts and dancing. This event includes the Super Spring, football and volleyball on the beach, a small triathlon and a lionfish fishing safari –The catch can be prepared as part of the gastronomy festival in which most of the restaurant owners of the community take part.

Ecology and preservation conferences, art expositions, sand sculpting contests on the beach… an amalgam of the ancient Mayan traditions, modern culture, and international colours that make this fun festival the cherry on top of the breathtaking destination that Mahahual is.
