According to reports from Patronage Cultur, a new record at Chichen Itza has been set for the most number of visitors in a single day. On Sunday 29 December, 18 thousand 696 people paid homage to one of Mexico´s modern Wonders of the World. This impressive statistic represents over 25% more visitors than the Spring Equinox in March 2019. In addition, this figure marks an increase of 58 percent more visitors to Mexico´s #1 archaeological zone, compared to the 7 thousand 728 visitors that visited during the September solstice.
Record at Chichen Itza
Usually during the December holidays, Uxmal is the most popular archaeological attraction. This year, on Sunday 22nd December, Uxmal was the second most visited archaeological site with 2,555 tourists. Similarly, Dzibilchaltún registered 1 thousand 239, and Lol Tun 319 visitors.
Mauricio Diaz Montalvo, director of the Yucatan Cultural and Tourist Service Units (Cultur), says that the Yucatan Peninsula´s archaeological zones received more visitors than expected. According to Díaz Montalvo, the most visited sites on Monday 23rd December were: Celestún with 1,054 tourists; Dzitnup, in Valladolid, together with the X´Kekén and Samulá cenotes, recorded 1,231 between the two. On the same day, Ek Balam received 880 tourists, the Zací market, Valladolid, 962, and El Corchito 623.
